Sweetwater Family Camping Weekend

Pack families,

We are looking forward to a GREAT weekend in the woods with the boys. Excited to have the new scouts join us on our first official Cub Scout camping trip of the year.

I am planning to head up that way late afternoon on Friday and spend 2 nights.

Folks will arrive at various times throughout the day so we will try hard to keep our location updated on the website so you can track us down!

Food is on our own this weekend as they will not have the dining halls open. You will be responsible for dinner Friday (if attending) as well as breakfast and lunch Saturday.

We are planning dinner on Saturday as a group along with breakfast on Sunday. Please bring $5 per person attending to help cover the cost of food.

Here are a few of the activities you should expect this weekend: Fall-Family-Camping-Weekend-Sweetwater-2017

  • BB’s and Archery
  • Field Games
  • Fishing
  • Crafts
  • Scout Skills
  • Campfire
  • Hiking
  • Skits and Songs
  • Sunday Chapel

We know it is the first time camping with the Scouts for many of you (and maybe the first time camping for some) so we wanted to prepare you with some FAQs and rules of the road. Plan for low  80s in the day and 60s at night. If you haven’t camped before this is just about an ideal situation… with one small complication. There is currently a 50% chance of showers on Saturday.

Let’s start with a list of items you should be sure to pack:

  • tent
  • sleeping bag/pillow
  • appropriate clothing for the weather including rain gear (we recommend a decent poncho, available at most outdoor stores and target / Wally World)
  • scout uniform (if not, an appropriate shirt)
  • HAT
  • flashlight
  • bug spray
  • sunscreen
  • water bottle (water is available on site, but it’s always good practice to bring a gallon or two)
  • toilet/shower articles
  • chairs to sit in around the campfire
  • showers/inside toilets are available (bring your own toilet paper)
  • fishing gear (if you want to fish on the shoreline of Lake Lanier, 17+ must have a license)
  • anything else you need for a great time outdoors!

Each scout attending will need to have a medical form A and B with them when they arrive this weekend. (It is attached to this post) 680-001_AB (1)

In good practice, we should have this for each adult as well.

I will have to collect these and keep them on file for the weekend so please be sure to bring with you.

We will be camping at Scoutland on Lake Lanier in Gainesville. Scoutland_Map

The physical address is 3685 Looper Lake Road, Gainesville, GA 30506.

This is a big weekend homecoming for me personally as this is one of the camps I attended as a scout!!

Here are general directions from I-985.

Directions
Scoutland is located on Lake Lanier near Gainesville, Georgia. From I-985:

  • Take Exit #16 to Highway 53 West. Follow Highway 53 for 2.2 miles.
  • Turn right onto McEver Road (and stay of Highway 53). Highway 53 dead-ends at Dawsonville Highway.
  • Turn left and continue 3.9 miles to Sardis Road.
  • Turn right and continue to first intersection.
  • Bear right (this is still Sardis Road) to stop sign.
  • Turn left and continue 0.6 mile to Antioch Campground Road.
  • Turn right and continue to Looper Lake Road.
  • Turn right and continue 0.6 mile to stop sign.
  • Turn left and an immediate right then follow the road into Scoutland.

It’s gonna be a GREAT trip.

Put on your patience pants and PLEASE help us maintain the crazy with your sons.

We LOVE having them with us on these trips, but as we have talked before, parent involvement is KEY to making this workout, especially since we will have our hands full making sure we are in the right places at the right times.

As a final reminder, Cubscouts are required to have a legal guardian over the age of 21 with them for a camping trip / overnight.

We are NOT able to take your son with us without you!

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
