Summer Events 2024

Let the sunshine in! It’s summertime!
We’re not slowing down this summer! We’ve got three great pack-level activities set for this summer season to help you earn the Summertime Pack adventure loop AND have fun!

June 15, 2024 8amFISHING

This June 15th, we’re going to gather at Lost Mountain Park pond and go fishing at 8am (fish bite when it’s cooler)! Bring your own bait, rod, reel, and supplies. You may want a cooler to keep those worms cool, a chair to sit in, and of course, a snack and drink. Don’t forget bug spray and sunscreen, as those critters are out of hiding. There is a small amount of parking up by the pond, so please carpool or walk up from the neighboring parking lots.

July 27th, 2024 9am

In July, we’ll be helping our elementary school next door (Due West Elementary) with gardening and landscape upkeep. We will be collecting trash, weeding, sweeping and raking. Some grownups will be powerwashing.

Please bring your brooms, shovels, rakes, yard wagons, gardening gloves, and large trash bags etc for this morning of duty to your community. Your cubs will earn service hours!
Typically, we work early in the day to avoid the heat! Bring your water, bug spray, and work ethic! These service hours help to keep our pack earning Journey To Excellence- GOLD standard.

August 11th, 2024 3pm – RECYCLED RAINGUTTER REGATTA

Get ready to sail at the Due West Pavilion! Grab your recycling bin and get creative! Build yourself a boat or raft with a SAIL. Need some guidance on building your boat? Check out some of these rules or the post from the last race (with lots of examples).

  • The boat must be newly built for the current Cub Scouting year.
  • NO motors allowed. Only wind sails will power the boats. (fun foam, index card)
  • Additional parts such as Lego Man Drivers or decals, paint, stickers, and glue are permitted. Make sure the decor follows the spirit of Scouting.
  • The finished boat length must be no longer than 8″ and no wider than 5″ (the race lane is 6″ wide)
  • The mast may not be higher than 7” from the deck.
  • The sail may not be in contact with any part of the boat except the mast.
  • Helpful tips – make sure your boat has a rudder to sail straight. Test it out in the bathtub!

Two scouts will race against each other at a time. Each boat must start with the back of the boat touching the end of the rain gutter; the scout should hold it there with one hand. When the starter says go, the kids will propel the boats by blowing on the sail with a drinking straw. THE SCOUT MAY NOT ADVANCE THE BOAT WITH HIS HAND or PHYSICAL STRAW AT ANY TIME. If one does so, he/she will be given a warning, and the race rerun if that child wins. If a boat gets broken or sinks during a race, the results stand.
GOOD LUCK, and happy boat building!
